Am I Too Old for the VMAs?

Last week, there was a lot of going on.

I was shocked to discover the MTV VMAs were (1) still a thing and (2) were being shown on a weekday evening (the night after the Presidential Debate, I might add).

Similar to turning on The Real World or the Jersey Shore (cringe, I know, but cut me some slack, it was back in the day), this felt like a good, free from deep thought decision.

It felt right.

Now, mind you, typically, I turn them on, feel a little too old to be watching, and go back to doing my thing.

But, this year, I was surprised.

There was some incredible NEW talent that fully held my attention, like:

Chappell Roan

Benson Boone

(shoutout to the upcoming, next generation of entertainers!)

This led to a few days where I went back and watched some of my favorite music videos.

Then, I got to thinkin about the TRUE nostalgia of Total Request Live (prompted by Carson Daly presenting at the VMAs), Pop-Up Video, and the VH1 Countdown.

This is what I’d watch every morning while getting ready for middle or high school.

In retrospect, it seems so simple and fun.

Between 1997 and 1998, at the peak of middle school angst, there’s honestly no telling how many times I watched the “My Heart Will Go On” music video.

Which leads me to my point for today:

When things feel heavy or chaotic or abundantly stressful, think back to something nostalgic from your youth and revisit it.

I find it comforting and hope you will, too.

(Let’s have some fun! Drop your favorite music video in the comments below!)
